BMORE

Notes of a Traveller

BMORE – Notes of a Traveller – is the result of a three months residency at the Baltimore Jewelry Center/USA.

I explored the city by cycling through it, the same as I had done many years ago in Shanghai (URBANAUTS).
During my residency, I collected copious amounts of handwritten notes, took photographs, created collages, and crafted wearable objects, all of which speak of my experiences in and interpretations of Baltimore.

These I have compiled in five visual anecdotes, a sketchbook and a printed book.

The Beauty and the Beast

Not unlike Baltimore, the blue crab, on first sight, looks aggressive and ugly. It is prone to defend itself in order to survive. And still, so much beauty can be found in its details.

Hardware Plus

Looking  beyond the obvious, this work imagines something beautiful in the ordinary. The pendants are made from hardware plus enamel, named in honor of the shop Hardware Plus on Pennsylvania Avenue and the street itself.

Signs & Sights

As I explore urban landscapes, I often wonder whether some of their sights—if placed within the pristine white cube of a museum—might not qualify as ‘art’.
With this thought in mind, I began a photo series some years ago titled Sta(d/t) Art. In German, Stadt means “city,” while the similarly pronounced statt means “instead of.”
Baltimore has proven to be a true treasure trove for this ongoing exploration.

HomeSick

Notes about rowhouses in the form of collages, inspired and based on the project LAST HOME STANDING by the photographer Ben Marcin.

Black Butterfly

THE WHITE L AND THE BLACK BUTTERFLY is a term coined by Lawrence Brown, professor at the Morgan State University, Baltimore. He coined the term to describe the contrast between the “White L”, an area around the Inner Harbor and stretching straight North to the wealthy neighborhoods of Homeland and Guilford, with the low income, majority Black neighborhoods that make up large swaths of East and West Baltimore.
