White – the silence of the snow,
the stillness of the clouds.
Black – the silence in the depth of the sea,
in the vastness of the universe.
In my mind, black and white symbolize the silence. As material I chose two materials: the cuttlefishbone and silver, which I partly oxydized.
The cuttlefishbone is white and light and comes from the sea. It once belonged to an animal that by now has vanished in silence, it is a memento mori, though maybe not in the classical sense.
The silver as a metal is heavy and I made it mostly black. It belongs to the earth and also can be found in the universe.
The restriction of the material to only two main components and the quasi absence of color seem crucial to me to represent the concept of silence.
